FOLK NAMES: Lucerne, Purple Medick, Purple Medicle, Buffalo Herb, Mu-su,
Jat, Qadb, Holy Hay.
PARTS USED: Whole flowering plant or germinating seeds (sprouts).
PLANT: An annual succulent plant indigenous to the
Mediterranean region that has been cultivated for centuries in other countries.
The yellow to violet-blue clover-like flowers hang in many blossomed
racemes that fruit into spiraled pods with 2 or 3 twists.
NOTE: Alfalfa originally came from Arabia and was called "al fasfasah".
Leaves contain beta-carotene, vitamins C, D, E and K, it also contains calcium,
magnesium, iron, phosphorous, and potassium. Alfalfa is considered a minor herb
in traditional Chinese medicine. In Arabia, alfalfa means "father" and was
thought to be the reason
the Arabian horses were so swift..
ACTIONS: Nutritive tonic, restorative tonic, antipyretic, alternative,
anti-anemic, antihemorrhagic, diuretic.
INDICATIONS: Increasing mothers milk, hot flashes in postmenopausal
women, wasting, inflammation, lower-back pains, acidosis, and rheumatic aches
and pains.
USAGE: Alfalfa is slow acting and should be taken
regularly on a daily basis for treating chronic disorders. Alfalfa tablets taken
before meals may prevent the absorption of cholesterol. Herbal teas can be taken
over a long term, but in small doses because it may cause bloating.
In traditional Chinese medicine, juice is squeezed from fresh alfalfa and used
to treat kidney and bladder stones. For fluid retention, alfalfa leaves are
added to a soup along with a small amount of lard and bean curd. Alfalfa sprouts
can be eaten regularly as an addition to salads or sandwiches.
PRECAUTIONS: May increase bleeding because of courmarin
content, drug induced photosensitivity, altered estrogenic effects with the use
of oral contraceptives and replacement therapies, increases risks of
hypoglycemic events. Persons with the autoimmune disease SLE or with a history
of SLE should avoid the use of alfalfa
